Frequently Asked Questions - Bedding
We did extensive consumer research to improve the communication of our brand including focus groups with small pet owners like yourself. The new packaging leverages our learnings, which include how to better convey the LOVE you have for your small pet and the importance you place on providing them with the very best home.
For products that are compressed like bedding, there are new regulations that require manufactures to label as the actual "expanded" volume; however, we are no longer allowed to say compressed or expanded and have replaced it with the acceptable term "useable".
No, neither the bedding nor the odor control have changed in any way. The odor control claim is now part of a Complete Comfort Care system that includes ALL the features small pet parents care about most.
Yes, but not in the usual consumer recycling bins. It is a number 4 LDPE bag and must be recycled at a proper bag recycling drop off (Some grocery stores have them).
There is a lot of controversy around the evidence of any harmful effects from pine. To ensure animal safety, we screen our shavings to remove dust and we test our shavings to validate that our drying and kilning procedures leave non-detectable levels of volatile oils. If you have further concern, we recommend checking with your small pet's veterinarian.
What is the difference between carefresh Ultra and carefresh complete Natural White?
There is no difference between carefresh Ultra and carefresh complete Natural White. When we updated the packaging for all the carefresh bedding products, we decided to change the name Ultra to Natural White to better coincide with our other colored bedding names. It is still made from the same reclaimed, pure white paper fiber we have always used.
Safety, quality and performance are really important to us. Because we make a natural product, wood content and color have always been variables in our fiber supply, by facility and by supplier. If you have concerns about your bedding, please contact us.
Yes, you can compost the bedding. However, fecal matter in concentrations can take a long time to compost or pose health risks. Please check with compositing experts on how to most safely compost pet litters and wait 120 days before using according to these published guidelines. http://www.ams.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media/GAP-GHP-Audit-Users-Gu...
carefresh® is developed and manufactured specifically for certain small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas and ferrets). We recommend checking with your local vet first before using it for other species. As with any changes to your pet’s care, if you do use it be sure to observe your pet closely for changes in behavior. Potential risk of impaction exists if your pet ingests a significant amount of any type of bedding. If you suspect impaction, discontinue use immediately and seek veterinary care.
Yes, carefresh is safe. Our goal is to provide the most wholesome environment possible for your pet. The exact formula is proprietary (much like Coke or Kentucky Fried Chicken) but all of our odor control ingredients are found in human grade products.
carefresh is a sustainable product that is made from natural fibers which can vary in color, similar to organic food or fruit, which may also look different from time to time. It’s all part of our decision to make a natural product.
We removed the baking soda from our odor stop formula used in pet bedding in January 2015. It was tested as safe but we removed it because our consumers asked us to. However, some packaging will still say baking soda on it because it took some time to get new bags and we did not want to delay product availability. To identify a bag without baking soda please check the lot number printed on the side of the bag. If the first set of numbers ends in a “5” then it does not contain baking soda. Please contact us if you have questions.
We do not add bleach to our products. The white comes from virgin reclaimed paper fibers.
We use paper fibers like those found in tissue and wood fibers like spruce, fir, pine and hemlock.
Yes, all our products are reviewed by veterinarians and other experts to ensure animal health and all our active ingredients are human grade.
Our bedding is manufactured to be 99% dust free, but some dust may be present as a result of using natural fibers. If your bedding has a higher level of dust, please contact us.
Yes, all our active ingredients are human grade and often found in safe-for-human products like facial tissues.
Our bedding does not contain the “Big 8” food allergens as stated by the FDA here http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/ucm079311.htm or common environmental allergens. Our carefresh small animal food contains soy and wheat, and there may be traces of fishmeal.
We do not use animals in the testing of any of our products. All our products do go through rigorous quality assurance procedures and third party laboratory testing and adhere to established safety guidelines mandated by regulatory and animal welfare agencies. Our products are made from substances that have a long history of safety for both the humans and animals, and are found in everyday products from both the food and cosmetics industries.
